Our work would not be possible without the many volunteers, donors, and supporters who sustain New Alternatives. As a predominately volunteer-driven and community-funded organization, we need you. Whether offering a monetary donation or giving of your time and talent, your contribution will be invaluable and can change the life of a young person in need.
Volunteers are the foundation of New Alternatives and the driving force behind all that we do. Every week, people from throughout the tristate area help prepare meals, offer tutoring, run ongoing client groups, oversee registration for case management, and assist with fundraising activities. They truly participate in and support virtually every aspect of our work.
Our greatest need currently is for kitchen volunteers at our weekly community dinners held every Sunday evening from 4–7:30 p.m. To get involved and sign up for shifts, please create a volunteer profile or log in to your volunteer account by using the links below.
Please note that we have suspended our usual volunteer activities during the coronavirus pandemic. We will resume them as soon as public health guidelines allow us to do so. Thank you.
WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS
"I was looking for a meaningful place to bring my love of baking... While Jen and I come once a month, I have an almost daily connection with New Alternatives. I think about the clients, the deep happiness I feel when I am there, and of course which cakes to make next.”
— Sarah Belin-Zerbib
WHAT OUR DONORS
"I am an LGBTQ former foster youth who knows what supportive services and community can mean to people! Thank you for your powerful guidance of our young people who need care, attention, and support. Thank you New Alternatives for making the differences that youth need!"
Our angel list is a list of donors willing to respond to the individual needs of LGBTQ+ homeless youth. Requests range from uniforms for a new job to household items for a first apartment. It is the best way to directly impact the lives of our clients and to assist with emergency necessities. You can sign up below to start receiving emails today. We only send a few requests per month, and you can fulfill them simply by replying to the email.
New Alternatives collects hygiene supplies and toiletries throughout the year and distributes them to LGBTQ+ homeless youth on a weekly basis. If you would like to join us in providing our clients with the essential items they need for self-care and want to start a toiletries drive, please email us at to confirm what our current needs are. Donated supplies can be brought to Metro Baptist Church at 410 West 40th Street every Sunday from 4–7:00 p.m.
Clothing and Household Items
Due to space constraints, New Alternatives no longer accepts direct donations of used clothing or household supplies. We have partnered with Out My Closet to provide clothing to our clients on a regular basis and strongly recommend that all clothing donations be directed to them. For other organizations that will accept similar donations in NYC, we have compiled a list that can be downloaded here.
Your ongoing support with recurring monthly donations is the best way to increase your impact and ensure that our work with LGBTQ+ youth continues. Two of the biggest things we depend on are consistency and financial stability. Recurring gifts provide both. As a monthly donor you will enjoy:
Hassle-free monthly donations with automatic payments from your credit or debit card,
The knowledge that your donation is put to work immediately,
An annual statement provided for tax purposes, and
The ability to change or suspend your donation at any time.
To sign up for recurring donations, simply select "Monthly" when entering your donation amount.
You can now help New Alternatives raise funds for LGBTQ+ homeless youth. Simply click one of the launch buttons below, create an account, and customize your own fundraising page to support our work today. Instructions can be downloaded here.
