GET

INVOLVED

Our work would not be possible without the many volunteers, donors, and supporters who sustain New Alternatives. As a predominately volunteer-driven and community-funded organization, we need you. Whether offering a monetary donation or giving of your time and talent, your contribution will be invaluable and can change the life of a young person in need.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteers are the foundation of New Alternatives and the driving force behind all that we do. Every week, people from throughout the tristate area help prepare meals, offer tutoring, run ongoing client groups, oversee registration for case management, and assist with fundraising activities. They truly participate in and support virtually every aspect of our work.

Our greatest need currently is for kitchen volunteers at our weekly community dinners held every Sunday evening from 4–7:30 p.m. To get involved and sign up for shifts, please create a volunteer profile or log in to your volunteer account by using the links below.

WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS

ARE SAYING

"I was looking for a meaningful place to bring my love of baking... While Jen and I come once a month, I have an almost daily connection with New Alternatives. I think about the clients, the deep happiness I feel when I am there, and of course which cakes to make next.”

— Sarah Belin-Zerbib

WHAT OUR DONORS

ARE SAYING

"I am an LGBTQ former foster youth who knows what supportive services and community can mean to people! Thank you for your powerful guidance of our young people who need care, attention, and support. Thank you New Alternatives for making the differences that youth need!"

Beyond the Shelter

An Interactive Virtual Pride Kick-Off Party!

A diverse cast of Broadway, TV, film, dance, and opera stars unite for an Interactive Virtual Pride Kick-Off Party and concert to raise money for LGBTQ+ homeless youth.

On June 4, 2020 at 8 pm EDT, the stars of Broadway, TV, film, dance, and opera will unite for an Interactive Virtual Pride Kick-Off Party to raise money for New Alternatives, an organization supporting the LGBTQ+ homeless youth. Director/Choreographer Matthew Johnson Harris (Take Me to the World at Carnegie Hall, Alvin Ailey core instructor) will direct and host the show. Harris has assembled a diverse cast of the entertainment industry’s favorite stars for an interactive evening of singing, dancing, sing-alongs, trivia, and more! “The majority of homeless LGBTQI youth are African American or Latinx. It was important for me to assemble a diverse cast that could be aspirational for the kids,” says Harris.

Beyond the Shelter will feature appearances and performances by Tituss Burgess (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Alex Newell (Glee, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist), Lauren Patten (Jagged Little Pill), L Morgan Lee (A Strange Loop), Marty Thomas (Wicked, Xanadu), Zach Miko (international model), Mykal Kilgore (recording artist, Jesus Christ Superstar Live), Jevon McFerrin (Hamilton, BET’s Twenties), Christian Dante White (My Fair Lady, Scottsboro Boys), Nicholas Rodriguez (One Life to Live, Tarzan), Elizabeth Stanley (Jagged Little Pill, On the Town), Angela Birchett (Lifetime’s The Clark Sisters, The Color Purple), Candice Marie Woods (Ain’t Too Proud, Book of Mormon), Antoine L. Smith (MJ the Musical, The Color Purple), Aisha Jackson (Frozen, Waitress), Alyssa Fox (Frozen, Wicked), Steven LaBrie (The Barber of Seville, Bellini's La Straniera), Arielle Jacobs (Aladdin, In the Heights), JJ Caruncho (Into the Woods, In the Heights), Brie Zimmer (Happy Birthday, Wanda June), Jarvis Manning (Ain’t Too Proud), Emilie Battle (Broadway Bounty Hunter, Dear Evan Hansen), Madge Dietrich (Kinky Boots), Marquise Hitchcock (Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular) and many more!

Harris has produced and directed several benefit concerts over the years in conjunction with organizations that offer support for marginalized groups. During this extremely difficult time of suffering and social distancing, these communities are affected at a much higher rate. Harris will add another night of inspiration and entertainment to his repertoire, once again bringing joy, awareness, and support to a community that is most in need. But this time, he is bringing the party to you! Harris says, “Though social gatherings may be cancelled, you can’t cancel Pride. Pride is all about celebrating your individual truth. These kids are the truest example of living authentically, and unfortunately, it cost most of them their homes.”

New Alternatives’ mission reaches far beyond just helping young people find shelter. Their varied programming enables clients to transition out of the shelter system to stable adult lives by providing long-term support, weekly case management, education services, life skills training, community-building recreational activities, opportunities for self-expression, and programs for HIV+ youth. In a time where food and shelter are even more necessary for survival and even more scarce, New Alternatives is expanding their already extensive services for this community. June is usually a very fruitful time for organizations like New Alternatives, but with all Pride events being cancelled this year, continued sustainable care hangs in the balance. 100% of donations from the show will go to support New Alternatives.

Beyond the Shelter will stream live on New Alternatives Facebook page and on YouTube on June 4, 2020 at 8 pm EDT. https://www.facebook.com/NewAlternatives/

DONATE

Angel List

Our angel list is a list of donors willing to respond to the individual needs of LGBTQ+ homeless youth. Requests range from uniforms for a new job to household items for a first apartment. It is the best way to directly impact the lives of our clients and to assist with emergency necessities. You can sign up below to start receiving emails today. We only send a few requests per month, and you can fulfill them simply by replying to the email.

Hygiene Supplies

New Alternatives collects hygiene supplies and toiletries throughout the year and distributes them to LGBTQ+ homeless youth on a weekly basis. If you would like to join us in providing our clients with the essential items they need for self-care and want to start a toiletries drive, please email us at info@newalternativesnyc.org to confirm what our current needs are. Donated supplies can be brought to Metro Baptist Church at 410 West 40th Street every Sunday from 4–7:00 p.m.

Clothing and Household Items

Due to space constraints, New Alternatives no longer accepts direct donations of used clothing or household supplies. We have partnered with Out My Closet to provide clothing to our clients on a regular basis and strongly recommend that all clothing donations be directed to them. For other organizations that will accept similar donations in NYC, we have compiled a list that can be downloaded here.

Recurring Donations

Your ongoing support with recurring monthly donations is the best way to increase your impact and ensure that our work with LGBTQ+ youth continues. Two of the biggest things we depend on are consistency and financial stability. Recurring gifts provide both. As a monthly donor you will enjoy:

  • Hassle-free monthly donations with automatic payments from your credit or debit card,

  • The knowledge that your donation is put to work immediately,

  • An annual statement provided for tax purposes, and

  • The ability to change or suspend your donation at any time.

To sign up for recurring donations, simply select "Monthly" when entering your donation amount.
