Volunteers needed to be “Santa” for homeless LGBT Youth

Our youth are back from Queer Spirit Camp and they are glowing! Fresh air, three healthy meals a day, and a bed to sleep in really make a difference.

Our next big project is a BBQ in Prospect Park in late August. If last year is any indication, we are going to need A LOT of meat!!! We’ll also need charcoal, beverages, cups, plates, utensils, napkins, side dishes . . . .if you want to make a donation for the BBQ, just put “BBQ” in the memo line of your check.

Below is the list of current needs.

1.) Got frequent flyer miles? Natasha needs a ticket to Atlanta, where she is going to be living with relatives.

2.) We need razors and bath soap.

3.) Anton needs $6.50 to replace his NY State ID.

4.) We need a copy of “The Courage to Heal” for a client who has recently disclosed about her rape.

5.) Sudan needs $50 to get a replacement set of keys for his building. He’s getting in by ringing all the doorbells right now.

6.) We need non-perishable food items to hand out. Things that require minimal cooking are best – ramen, cup of noodles, tuna, soups, etc.

7.) Coco needs laundry detergent.

8.) Sakima needs $95.00 to pay a court fee. If he doesn’t pay the free, he will be arrested.

9.) Rhiei is five months pregnant and getting bigger fast. She needs maternity clothes.

10.) We need deodorant! It’s hot and the youth are sweaty!

Happy Pride! Our youth had a great time – they danced all the way down 5th avenue thanks to 92.3 radio, who provided a sound system and DJ for our float.

Our next big project is Queer Spirit Camp – for only $150, one of our youth can spend a week enjoying the outdoors at Easton Mountain in Upstate NY. A cross between a traditional summer camp and a retreat focusing on issues such as sexual identity and HIV/AIDS prevention, Queer Spirit Camp is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our youth. Sponsor a youth today!

Below is the list of current needs.

1) We have a number of youth requesting washcloths and towels. Got more towels than you need? Donate some to New Alternatives,

2) Ykisha and Tyeshawn just arrived from Texas, where the shelters did not accept their lesbian relationship, and need $35 to get a domestic partnership so they can be housed together.

3) Jonathan and Ivan, who are sleeping on park benches, need blankets.

4) Jonathan and Ivan both need $15 for a NYC birth certificate.

5) Caleb has reconciled with his mother and wants to go home to live with her. He needs a ticket to Nashville, TN.

6) We need non-perishable food items to hand out. Things that require minimal cooking are best – ramen, cup of noodles, tuna, soups, etc.

7) It’s summer! We need sunscreen lotion since the youth are outside a lot.

We need lettersize envelopes.

9) Tanya needs $35 to pay for the drug screening required to get a job as a home attendant.

10) We need deodorant! It’s hot and the youth are sweaty!

Great news! The members of the Stonewall Foundation’s Quartershare Initiative chose New Alternatives as one of their beneficiaries for this year and presented us with a $5,000 grant check.

Disco Night is THIS Saturday!!!!! Join us at the Monster, 80 Grove St, 6-9pm on May 7th for amazing performances and a silent auction, featuring two tickets to Priscilla Queen of the Desert on Broadway, as well as jewelry and other fabulous items.

Below is the list of current needs.

1.) Cupid, who is living in an adult women’s shelter, needs laundry soap because the shelter does not provide it.

2.) We need women’s underwear, all sizes, and socks!

3.) Sasha, a transgender client, desperately needs shoes – hers are falling apart! If you want to grant this request, a Payless gift certificate would be best, so she can try shoes on.

4.) Winston needs $15 for a NYC birth certificate.

5.) We are still looking for a copy of “The Courage to Heal” for one of our youth who recently disclosed her sexual abuse history.

6.) We need non-perishable food items to hand out. Things that require minimal cooking are best – ramen, cup of noodles, tuna, soups, etc.

7.) Coco just started school and needs supplies for her art class. In particular she needs a block of brown oven-bake clay and casting resin.

8.) Charles recently moved into mental health housing and needs towels, a shower curtain, and a bath mat.

9.) Brandy needs $135 for her passport.

10.) Jaymmie and Jamar need $35 for a domestic partnership so they can get into the family shelter.

11.) Joshua needs $40 to finalize his legal name change.

Excellent News! One of our clients, Winston, just got into Hunter College. Winston also recently got a full-time job at Harlem United and is about to move into a place of his own after years of homelessness.

Save the date: May 7th is our annual Disco Night fundraiser. Please join us for this really fun fundraiser featuring drag performances by the Imperial Court and live music from AmberRose Marie. The event will be from 6:00-9:30pm at the Monster, 80 Grove St (by Sheridan Square park). Tickets are $15 each and there will also be a silent auction. Don’t miss it!
Below is the list of current needs for our youth.

1.)We urgently need non-perishable, easy to prepare food items for youth who are living indoors, but have limited cooking facilities. Items like boxed macaroni and cheese, canned soups, ramen, cup of noodles, and cans of tuna fly off our pantry shelves!

2.) Winston needs $100 to pay his deposit at Hunter.

3.) Jonathan needs $12 to get his birth certificate from VA

4.) We need women’s underwear, all sizes

5.) We need a copy of “The Courage to Heal” for a client who recently disclosed her incest history

6.) We need file folders for our client records.

7.) We are urgently in need of hygiene supplies – we’re completely out of razors, toothbrushes, and deodorant.

5) Djia, one of our trans youth, and her partner Rhiei just found out that they are having a baby would like a copy of “what to expect when you’re expecting.” Rhiei is having a hard time w nausea and would like ginger tea and ginger candy.

6) We need non-perishable food items to hand out. Things that require minimal cooking are best – ramen, cup of noodles, tuna, soups, etc.

7) We need ziploc bags for packaging sandwiches.

We need sanitary pads for our young women.

Hello, Angels!

We’ve been keeping busy this winter!  The youth enjoyed ice-skating at Bryant Park a few weeks ago and this weekend we are looking forward to taking the youth to the Metroplitan Museum of Art!

Below is the list of current needs.

1.) Josephine, one of our transgender clients, needs $36 to get a domestic partnership with her boyfriend so they can get into a family shelter.

2.) Donna just got her first apartment and needs silverware.

3.) We need blankets and bookbags for the street homeless youth.

4.) JC and Winston need $15 each for birth certificates.

5.) Destiney, one of our bisexual youth, is pregnant and would like a copy of “what to expect when you’re expecting.”

6.) We need non-perishable food items to hand out.  Things that require minimal cooking are best – ramen, cup of noodles, tuna, soups, etc.

7.) Coco needs newborn size diapers for her sister’s new baby.

8.) Courtney works in the food industry and would like to get her Food Protection Certificate so she can get a better job.  The class costs $114.00

Hello, Angels!

As the Spring semester begins, we have several homeless LGBT college students who are in need of our support, including Douglas at Rutgers and Joseph at BMCC. If you are interested in purchasing textbooks or class supplies for a homeless LGBT college student, please email me at kate@newalternativesnyc.org

Below is the list of current needs.

1) Deirdre, one of our transgender cilents, is in the process of becoming a NYC cab driver. She needs $60 to complete the required defensive driving course.

2) Inri needs $50 for his application fee for Bard College.

3) Misty still needs $135 to get a passport with her new gender on it.

4) We need deodorant – we’re completely out.

5) Ryanne needs $17.85 so she can visit her family in Nyack, NY.

6) We need non-perishable food items to hand out. Things that require minimal cooking are best – ramen, granola bars, tuna, juice boxes, etc.

7) Samantha and Veneza are still looking for jobs and need dress clothes. Vaneza wears men’s clothing, her pants are size 42 waist and 30 length and her shirt is extra large. Samantha wears women’s clothing, size 12 pants, extra large shirt, and size 8 shoes.

Naiym and Hassaan need $15 each to get their birth certificates in order to prove that they are brothers so they can get housed together in a city family shelter.
