What We Do

New Alternatives provides a range of services designed to help LGBT youth “go beyond” homelessness and transition into stable adult lives.

Basic Needs

Nutritious homemade meals, distribution of hygiene supplies, emergency clothing, metrocards, and urgent referrals for shelter are all part of the ways we meet the basic needs of homeless youth.

Life Skills Training

Whether the topic is HIV prevention or anger management, nutrition or dealing with conflict in the workplace, the skills discussed at our weekly life skills training are relevant and essential.

Case Management

This is the place for young people to bring their problems, none too small or too big. Arrest warrants, finding a long-lost mother, applying for disability benefits, returning to high school, back taxes . . . we help with it all.

Education

Volunteer tutors help with GED and SAT preparation, as well as college applications and financial aid paperwork.

Self-Expression

Creative writing and video groups give youth a chance to participate in the healing process of working through and sharing their experiences.

Community-Building and Recreational Activities

College tours, BBQs, camping, beach trips, apple-picking; holiday celebrations, and trips to conferences are just some of the many activities that New Alternatives offers year-round.
